You accidentally hit "off" instead of "snooze" on the alarm.  The shower water took forever to warm up, the shirt you planned to wear is actually still crumpled at the bottom of the dirty clothes pile, you're out of coffee, and the kids are still in their pajamas when you need to be walking out of the door.  As if all of this isn't enough, it's also winter, and the South finally decided to express it with a nice layer of frost over your car. Hopefully you read this post, and you have plenty of options in your arsenal to ensure that ice doesn't slow you down on your already-late-for-everything day.  No matter what your budget, location, or car knowledge, it is possible for your vehicle to be completely defrosted and safe to drive by the time the toddler is hooked into her car seat and the teenager is bugging you for driving lessons.  In fact, you can put that kid to work by demonstrating these tips, they're so easy! COVER IT UP On an otherwise dry evening, frost and ice forms from the dew that settles and freezes as temperatures plummet overnight.  You can have that dew settle on something else rather than your windows by simply inserting a barrier. You can purchase a commercial tarp or cover for $15-$50 at most vehicle maintenance shops, but they don't tend to stay stocked down here, so you can try your own as well.  Blankets, towels, folded sheets, even newspapers can help keep your windshields free of Frozen! (We can't say the same about the DVD player in the back.) WATER Be careful with this one, folks.  If you decide to pour a bucket of water over your windshield to help melt the ice, make sure you're in the right conditions to do so.  For one, don't use cold water - that might just freeze over the frost and give you a thicker layer of ice to chip through.  Don't use boiling or hot water either - the extreme temperature changes could have a significantly negative impact on the glass.  As in, a shattering experience.  IF you decide to use water (since it's easily accessible to everyone), use lukewarm water and very quickly wipe down the windshield after dispensing a bucket over it.  And if it's less than 25F out, just toss this idea altogether and watch the icicles form as the water hits the frigid air. CONCOCTIONS Some brilliant people who probably grew up in Minnesota or Michigan invented this spectacular stuff that squirts out of a bottle and literally MELTS ice!  You can sometimes buy this inexpensive commercial concoction where you get the rest of your maintenance materials, but you might have better lucky ordering online or having your cousin in Minnesota sending you a bottle.  Or you could just make your own by filling a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol and adding a few squirts of dish soap (mix well, don't shake).  Also known as hand sanitizer. SURROUND THE ICE If you're anything like me, you're number one concern when you leave the house is to get to the car as quickly as possible, climb inside, crank the heat, and try not to think to hard about going back in for a pair of gloves.  Lucky for you, there is an option to help that defroster move along a little.  Turn the heat all the way up, the defroster all the way on (don't forget the rear defroster if you have it), and place your hand on the top of the window.  This could leave a hand print on the glass (which can be cleaned up later with some window cleaner), but the warmth of your hand will act as a second defroster, sending heat through the glass and melting the ice at the top, while the car helps melt from the bottom, doubling the speed and keeping you inside the car. REMOTE START If you've ever wondered "Why would I ever need to start the car before I'm in it?" this is the answer to that question.  If the weatherman is calling for frost, turn the temperature gauges to heat and defrost before you go in for the night.  The next morning, you can turn the engine on while you're still zipping up the kid's coats and distributing lunch boxes.  By the time you get everyone buckled in and ready to go, so is the vehicle. HOW NOT TO DE-ICE YOUR WINDSHIELD With Cold or Boiling Water Cold water could freeze over the top of your windshield, especially if it's particularly cold out.  Boiling water could shatter your windshield from the excessive temperature difference. With Salt Water Up North, they use Road Salt to melt ice and snow and make the roads easier to navigate, right? So it would only make sense to use that, right? Wrong.  Salt is bad for your car.  There's really no getting around that.  It causes corrosion, rust, and creates damage that can only be replaced - not undone.  This is why people from the frigid areas of the country tend to keep their nice vehicles cooped up in the garage during their Great White Winters. With a Credit Card Often used as an ice scraper for those that can't find theirs, Credit Cards offer a stiff, flat edge to get under the ice and chip away at it. Not only is this time-consuming, but you could scratch the glass by wearing down the curved edges of the card into a sharper, knife-like blade and cutting into the windshield.  Dropping it in drifts of slush and ice is also pretty easy, and would mean you have a long morning of calling to cancel said card and re-order another. You're going to need that Credit Card to buy a cup of hot cocoa once you're done freezing your hands off chipping away at ice. Not Do It Frost and ice are significant visual blocks.  Don't put yourself and your passengers in danger because you're in a hurry.  Be safe, be responsible, and use one of these easy tips to de-ice your car. For us Southerners, the "nip" in the air at 62 degrees is about as wintery as we like it.  We prefer plastic snow flakes over the frozen H20 variety, and have no problem with our Christmas lights not getting covered in drifts of white blankets.  Quite frankly, that stuff makes it difficult to drive to football games, not to mention cause bread and milk to go missing for days at a time.  We are just not equipped for what the rest of our great nation defines as "winter." We are, however, very well prepared for the cheer when we don't have to deal with all of that icy freezing temperature nonsense.  'Tis the season of giving, and with our Christmas trees up and glowing, our charity drives in full swing, and end of the year sales posters plastering our windows, nothing brightens up our day like hosting a good gift-giving operation! Every year, we have a collection of customers who give the best gift you can give - a new ride!  This year, it started a little early, with a pre-Thanksgiving Christmas gift to High School Senior Joey Thornton. Joey's parents hunted through our pre-owned lot for the perfect truck to gift to their son with Internet Sales Representative Larry Shuler.  Considering Joey's plans to attend Georgia Tech next fall, they wanted to ensure the vehicle was in good shape, and would safely transport their second eldest back and forth to school.  When Larry showed them the 2004 Ford Explorer Adrenaline with hard bed cover and only 44,000 miles, they knew they'd found it.  Thus began the elaborate plan to surprise Joey with his first vehicle - and the whole family showed up to see his face!  Financed with the help of Grandma and Grandpa Thornton, we detailed the truck, equipped it with some new tires, assessed the trade-in, and placed the perfect giant bow on the hood. It was difficult for the family to hide behind our tinted windows and watch Joey arrive with his girlfriend and father in the trade-in, bubbling with excitement, cam corder charged and held at the ready.  We watched through the window as Joey's dad gestured at the truck, parked front and center, golden blow catching a soft breeze. Joey assessed the vehicle, and family burst through the doors.  Surprise and confusion clouded the 18-year-old's face as he took in his mom, younger sisters, older brother, Milton Ruben employees, cameras, and keys extended toward him. Realization dawned with a "what?!" as the keys were placed into his palm. With a dozen sales representatives, finance managers, and sales managers looking on, smiling with joy, Joey climbed into his new truck, Internet Sales Representative Larry Shuler pointing out features here and there. Employees slowly dispersed to tend to their jobs, a little brighter at seeing a family so happy, as the Thorntons gathered for a photo-op, discussing celebratory dinner plans. We knew we'd be getting one of the first 2015 Corvette Stingrays in the region.  We knew it would be fairly impressive.  We prepared, studied up on the modern updates to the classic muscle.  When we got notice from Chevrolet that our 2015 Corvette Stingrays had shipped, we cleared the show room in anticipation. We thought we were ready. But friends, there's no way we could have prepared for the immaculate beauty and power of even one 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51.  No disrespect to the classic dream car of the 1960's - this is a whole new generation of vehicle.  And with this kind of advanced, almost Bourne-esque technology, with the body style that reminds us of the supercars you could only fantasize about, and the power that melts the hearts of millions - this ain't your grandpa's muscle car.  I mean just LOOK at it! Oh excuse me, am I drooling?? The 2015 Corvette comes in a multitude of options.  Of course you have the coupe, as well as the convertible for those who want to feel the impact of almost 460 horsepower on their face.  From there, it extends to the 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, and those trims also come with the option of the Z51 Performance Package. Both Corvettes in our showroom are 2015 Corvette Stingray 3LTs with a Z51 Performance Package. With varying color seat options, each Stingray is equipped with 8-way power leather seats, keyless access with push-button start, power tilt and telescoping steering column, two 8-inch HD color displays, and the 9-speaker Bose audio system with a minimum 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM Satellite Radio. An upgrade from 1LT to 2LT or 3LT will give you heated seats, lumbar support, seat emblems, Bose' premium audio system, memory seats, and extended trial period of XM radio, and so much more. The 3LT Z51 sports a custom Napa leather wrapped interior, with Corvette emblems in the seats. This particular vehicle was chosen with Grand Touring seats, but Performance Sports Seats are also available. Optional in all other trims, the Z51 3LT's steering wheel is wrapped in leather. Heated and ventilated seats, navigation, and HD screens in driver display as well as the digital information system take the 3LT a step above. The new 2015 Stingray offers a performance data and video recorder to keep memories - or spy on the valet. The gray Corvette (custom-built by a customer) is a 7-speed manual. The Velocity Yellow (currently looking for a home) Corvette is an 8-speed Paddle Shift Automatic Transmission. Both have Performance Gear Ratios. Active Fuel Management deactivates four of the eight cyclinders when you don't need that extra punch of power to improve fuel economy to an average of 29 mph highway. The direct injection acts as a key performance technology facet, delivering fuel to achieve maximum thermal and combustion efficiency, and increasing torque, power, and fuel efficiency. Without, of course, compromising it's 0-60 in 3.8 seconds capacity, nor it's roaring 460 horsepower. Air flow is a high priority in the Stingray this year, even in the Brembo brakes. Air flows through the front grill to the wheel wells to assist in cooling the brakes and enhancing performance and longevity. Exclusive to the Corvette Stingray brand, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Zero Pressure tires optimize ride, grip, and handling. Our Velocity Yellow Z51 also sports color-matched calipers. Electronic Limited-Slip Differential promotes improved stability and responsiveness. A hood air extractor allows flow of air through the front grill and over the radiator for optimal air flow, reducing front-end lift, increasing downforce, and improving handling at high speeds. LED lamps cast light into a reverse reflector to illuminate evenly and clearly on the taillamps. A third brake light sits on the rear spoiler for prime effective warning. Technology masters both high and low beams with Bi-Xenon HID lamps on the head lights. The 2015 Stingray is 100 pounds lighter than its predecessor. Magnetic Ride Control is a real-time damping system that "reads" the road every millisecond and re-adjusts in under 15 milliseconds, making it the fastest acting suspension in the world. The Z51 coupe is sold in the "Pacific" style - with aggressive racing build. The "Pacific" coupe design includes a distinctively sharp rear spoiler. Multiple driver modes lets you slip from the safety of "weather" to the ferocious power of "track" with the turn of a wheel. Has anybody else been battling with this consistent love-hate / why-am-I-wasting-my-time-on-this-trash guilty-pleasure of quizzes on buzzfeed?  Between finding out which Disney Prince you're destined to marry and what kind of Vampire would drink your blood rather than your celebrity doppelgänger who makes fun of your street to first pet ratio-ed Rapper Name, there are the classics.  Like the personality test.  And go figure - according to the author, who I'm sure is a clinical psychologist with all sorts of legitimate certifications, degrees, doctorates, and a highly impressive Rapper Name street cred, I'm Type A Personality - the organized planner.  Who shows up on time, is reliable, a leader, generally accomplished, focused, ambitious, and has a pretty elaborate idea of what the perfect car is. It might be true.  We may all be doomed to hours and hours of weathering the elements in search of the perfect vehicle - yes to those tires, no to that body style, etc. We had customer that needed his FJ Cruiser decked out and ready for some off-road action. When we were done with it, it looked so nice, we decided to modify one of our own.  (Photo on left provided by Milton Ruben Photographer Kris Olsen.)   Or we might just shop at Milton Ruben.  And we just might take those tires and put them on this body style. Ah, the miracles that can occur at the hands of a certified technician! Meet Certified Toyota Technician Jimmy Berry, who took on the task of lifting and "shoeing" an FJ Cruiser for our lot.   With great pride in the capabilities of our highly trained team, we present a visual representation of a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser, transforming to an off-roading beast of a butterfly. STEP ONE After removing the manufacturer tires that came on the FJ Cruiser from Toyota, Jimmy disassembles steering components to gain access to the shocks.  Jimmy must remove the shocks, install a lift kit, and replace the shocks. Service Director Kevin Woodard dropped in to check on Jimmy's progress. He inspected the installation of the spacers on the lift to ensure that the complicated inner-workings of the FJ's suspension were secure. Lifting a vehicle is a multi-phased process, beginning with removing the tires and rims, and then taking off the shocks (it looks like a spring), and placing a spacer between the shocks and the suspension to literally "lift" the body of the vehicle up from the tires. Here, Jerry disassembles the steering component to gain access to remove the shock. STEP TWO Put on the tires. Each of these tires, built on a 18" aluminum rim, weighs roughly 45 pounds. "I'm not going to the gym tonight," Jimmy said while heaving the tire up onto the wheel. Jerry places lugnuts that will secure the wheel onto the wheel hub.  If lugnuts are not properly tightened, the wheel could shake as they rotate, damaging the interior of the wheel well. Using an impact wrench to tighten lugnuts onto wheel hub, Jimmy is careful to tighten to torque specifications. STEP THREE Re-calibrate microchips in each of the tires, as well as on the motherboard in the dashboard of the vehicle so they communicate properly.  If this step gets skipped, the computer on the car will always read that the vehicle has improperly inflated tires. Jimmy uses an Electronic Calibration Tool, to re-calibrate the TPMS - Tire Pressure Monitoring System.  The ECT basically activates the sensors in the tire, which will then send a signal to the ECT with the necessary numbers for the tires.  Jimmy will take that information and transfer it to the TPMS on the vehicle. Jimmy ensures that the TPMS has properly re-calibrated the motherboard in the dash of the vehicle. This way, the tire pressure monitoring system will only flash a notification on the dash when the tires are no longer properly inflated. A dangerous mistake some people may make is to forget the spare.  Jimmy was sure to include the spare in his initial calibration, as well as his double check of each tire's pressure. STEP FOUR Step back and enjoy the view. October 24, 2012 - The day that speed demons everywhere cried with joy.  The day that Chrysler Inc. decided to pursue the concept of the powerful Hellcat (that may not be true). The day that Texas announced their 85-mph speed limit on Hwy 130. Possibly the day that hundreds of car-enthusiasts decided to upgrade their tires. "Tires?? Why would they buy new tires??", you ask. Good question.  The answer? The tire's speed rating. On the far right, in pink and purple, is the tire's "service description," consisting of load rate, and speed rating. Speed rating is what kind of miles per hour a tire is capable of withstanding.  Think of it in the sense of the term, "burning rubber."  When a tire meets the road, it does so continuously, over and over again as it carries your vehicle across a stretch of distance.  This creates friction, thus heat.  The faster you go, the more the tire meets the road, the more friction, the more heat. Alas, the term "burning rubber." Found in the alphanumeric "service description" next to a tire's size on the sidewall, speed rating is assessed from a lab test by the manufacturer where the tire is applied to a large metal drum at the pressure that equates to the load rating.  The tire is spun against the drum at increasing speeds in ten minute intervals until the necessary speed limit is met.  That number is represented by a letter. It should be noted that these gradings assume the tire has not been damaged, is within tread life, is properly inflated, and that routine maintenance (ie: rotation) has been kept up. Now before you start hyperventilating that you need a "Z"-rated tire on your minivan, keep in mind that most cars have a "top" speed they can reach before they max out.  It would be kind of worthless to equip your Sienna with Z(Y) tires when the fastest it can reach is 120 mph.  (Which makes it the perfect vehicle for your driver-in-training teenager, right?)  Save your money for that freedom cruise when the kid finally turns 18 - for you, not them.  Conversely, it's not a good idea to put a lower-rated tire on a higher-rated vehicle.  This is why it's suggested you only ride on the spare tire for a day or two at lower speeds - it really can't handle much more than that. Of course, if you are, hypothetically, one of these mythical speed demons (because no one ever really tests out the reaches of their muscle engine, surely), then some crazies in the tire industry brought us the "Z-series."  As you can see in the infographic, Z-rated tires are then expanded into three levels.  These tires have the best grip and stopping power, but when (hypothetically) used to their purpose, have a very weak tread life.  Yes, these are the tires the Nascar drivers have to change every twelve left turns - because they've quite literally burned off the tread. (Whoa.) Ever seen those shredded tires on the interstate left in the wake of an 18-wheeler? That's the fate of a tire not properly rated to the weight and speed of it's automobile.  For a semi, it has a multitude of back-ups.  For you, the results could be fatal.  A safe rule of thumb is to stay with the speed rating chosen by your vehicle's manufacturer, or, as always, consult an expert. There you have it.  The last of our four primary components that define the perfect tire for your ride.  We've smoothed out the points of ride quality, lengthened the life of your tire, bundled you up for inclement weather tires, and, finally, given you a quick recap of speed rating.  Hopefully these basics will help you in your next tire-search.  Of course, these are still only a small slice of the pie that is complicated tire formulas, but maybe now the words our tire experts are saying will make a little more sense - saving you time in your next visit. Between the funnel cakes, great music, and awesome people we met at Fort Gordon's Springfest last April, we couldn't resist another opportunity to support our #LoveAugusta community - so when we heard that Fort Gordon hosts one of the biggest, brightest, and boldest Independence Day bashes in the SouthEast, we practically leapt out of our loafers to be a part of it. And THIS time, it is ALL about our customers, our troops, and the beautiful people of Augusta, GA, and Aiken, SC.  Here's a list of the top ten things we can't wait for this week: 1. Our first ever three-day Freedom Tent Sale on Barton Field: We have set up a huge tent on Barton Field next to the stage - and there's no way you'll miss the stretches of gorgeous vehicles we'll have available for test drives (yes, ALL of them will be available for test drives).  We are even bringing some of our best Pre-Owned stock! We also have top secret, insane, crazy, over-the-top deals and discounts happening out there.  So insane, we're scared to post it in a public venue. (Corporate sponsors, look away!) We have already given away one of our three Yeti Coolers - come to our Tent Sale and be the one to go home with the second! 2. Seeing the Swingin' Medallions: Hitting the stage on Thursday evening at 7pm, the Swingin' Medallions are known as the "Party Band of the South," mastering covers of our favorite classics, as well as bringing their own sound to classic rock originals.  Every performance is a party with the Swingin' Medallions!  (Does this mean we should bring our dancing shoes?) Check them out on Facebook! 3. Getting rid of all of this junk: We have boxes stacked up all over the back nooks and crannies of our offices - and we're ready to get rid of them! Who knows what's inside! Jeep hats, Ram hats, Dodge hats, Mopar blankets, cups, coozies, water bottles, thermoses, backpacks, duffel bags, a Yeti Cooler, and that's all the digging I could do before the paper cuts descended.  It's a little late for spring cleaning - but we're doing it anyway.  Stay up to date with what we're doing with all that junk by liking us on Facebook, following us on Instagram, and on Twitter. This basket stuffed with Ram merchandise is just one of the things we're giving away this week! 4. Seeing you having a blast: One little card up our sleeve for the Carnival on Thursday - an Instagram Scavenger Hunt!  I will be investigating the grounds bright and early Thursday morning to sniff out stuff hidden around the place - and I'll be posting hints to help you find and photograph something happening at the fair.  The contest goes from 3:30 - 5:00, and every correct answer gets a point.  I can't tell you what you'll win yet, but trust me, it's valued at over $150. I've had to hide it from people so it doesn't disappear! I can't show you what's up for whoever wins the Instagram Scavenger Hunt - but I can tell you it's worth a lot more than this. 5. Giving out coupons: It's hard not to be patriotic when so many of our employees are veterans, and so many of our amazing customers come to us from Fort Gordon.  So we've put together a special coupon for anyone with a military ID - and it's hundreds of dollars off.  See the folks at our Tent Sale for more details! 6. Telling everyone about our DriveBaby™ Contest: It's shocking to hear that there aren't more people talking about our DriveBaby™ scholarship! It's so easy to enter, and so simple to win - why wouldn't you want to enter your little one? We are so excited to tell more people about this exciting opportunity - and it's super exciting! (Can you tell we're excited about it?) 7. Funnel Cake: 'Nuff said. (Drools.) 8. Showing off our specialty wrapped and decaled vehicles: The Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram manager David Percival is a huge fan of community events, and he has not failed to bring us some very special products to show off at this one.  You'll have to come see us to find out what I'm talking about, but when we say glory and patriotism, we mean it! 9. Listening to the Signal Corps Band: Because who has more practice knocking the Star Spangled Banner out of the park than a military band?? 10. Fort Gordon's Famous Firework Spectacle: It's infamous.  It's resilient.  It's persistent.  And from what we hear, it's Army Strong.  We can't wait to be in awe of Fort Gordon's once-a-year everything-but-the-kitchen-sink blowout firework spectacular!   After a list of stuff like that, why in the world would you NOT be there?  Drop in, take something off our hands, and enjoy everything Fort Gordon Morale Wellness and Recreation has been hard at work to provide! It's that time again - time for us to host Shepeard Community Blood Center 's mobile blood donation truck on our pre-owned lot!  In the spirit of giving, we thought you might like to expand your mind with a few facts about donating the gift of life: 1. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. 2. The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O (the universal blood type). 3. The average red blood transfusion is 3 pints. 4. Over 1.5 million Americans were diagnosed with cancer in 2013. One third of chemotherapy patients will require a blood transfusion during treatment. 5. One car accident victim could require as much as 100 pints of blood. 6. A single blood donation can save as many as three people. 7. Risk of accidents increases over the summer and during the holiday season, thus increasing the need for blood. 8. 4.5 million Americans would die each year without the assistance of a blood transfusion. 9.  On average, the typical blood donation from start to finish takes about 45 minutes.  (The actual blood-taking takes about 10 minutes.) 10.  One pint of blood weighs about a pound.  So every time you give blood, you lose a pound. 11.  Human beings have four blood types - A, B, AB, and O.  (Cows have over 800 blood types.) 12. President Reagan required a total of twelve pints of blood transfusion after the assassination attempt in 1981. 13. President Jimmy Carter gave multiple gallons of blood over his lifetime (type A negative). 14. Only 5% of the American population donates blood on a regular basis, despite over 37% being qualified. 15. One in seven people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. This summer, Shepeard's Center has teamed up with Harry's Saw Shop to put all donors in a drawing to win a riding lawn mower - a Husqvarna powered by Briggs & Stratton.  They will be in our Pre-Owned lot on Wednesday, July 9 from 11am until 3:30pm - perfect to squeeze into your lunch hour!
