Thanks to fuel-efficient vehicles such as the Chevrolet Cruze, General Motors says its U.S. sales rose nearly 8 percent last month. GM sold 214,915 vehicles in July, including nearly 25,000 Cruzes. That could make it America's top-selling car for the second straight month. Sales of the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain small crossovers rose 80 percent. Toyota has developed a safety system that can automatically stop a car in the moments before a collision with a pedestrian. The technology is one of several the company's Higashi Fuji Technical Center in Japan is working on to make driving safer, and will begin appearing in Toyota cars in the near future. Built on existing pre-collision detection technology, the new system uses a millimeter wave radar and stereo camera to constantly monitor what's in front of the vehicle.
