Augusta's Got Soul (And Country. And Rock.): Music Festivals Take Summer

banner
Few people know just how "on the map" Augusta, GA really is, not just for Ft. Gordon's continuing expansion, but for playing root to celebrities' careers. Hulk Hogan is a smile/grimace product of our little metropolitan city on the river, with some loving and some hating the taste left in Augusta's mouth. Of course, he was only born here, and raised in Tampa, FL, so you don't have to claim the renown wrestler as brethren if you choose not to. Few would argue to claim Laurence Fishborn as Augusta-grown with such glowing and well-rounded performances as in Hannibal, Boyz In Da Hood, CSI, and, of course, the red pill or the blue, the Matrix trilogy. And of course the musicians we all hold dear, James Brown, Amy Grant, and the members of Lady Antebellum (all the sudden that amphitheater makes a lot of sense, huh?) Maybe it's the rise of these stars that inspire the very root of musical identity so deep into Augusta heritage and culture - we can't be sure. What we can be certain of is this - it is almost our favorite season, and we Southerner's can't be held in at a time like this. Summer is the season to celebrate, and that's precisely what we are going to do through the very root of our musical identity. Here's a few ways you can't stop the beat in the CSRA this summer:   BLUES, BREWS, & BBQ: A gem of our town, this would mark the seventh year that the Columbia County Ampitheater has played host to this easy, breezy, good time, hosting The Breaking News Band and Funky Bluester on Friday, May 1st, starting at 6:30 p.m. In addition to the smooth grooves, guests will be able to imbibe in Vineyard Wine Market's craft beers and SouthBound BBQ's famous meals. COST: $5, kids under 12 free. MORE INFO.   PAPA JOE'S BANJO-B-QUE If it's the combo of southern tunes and pulled pork that fancies your fiddle, check out Papa Joe's Banjo-B-Que in Evans, also known as the BBQ competition of the year, featuring up-and-coming rock and bluegrass bands from all around the region. And it doesn't stop there. As a premiere opportunity to camp out and veg out, this event goes all out in making the trip worth it, with Pig Racin', a petting zoo, and craft beer to boot. This year's event will be at the Evans Towne Center on May 22&23. COST: $35-$65/head. MORE INFO.   "A DAY IN THE COUNTRY" MUSIC FESTIVAL A tradition that ranks in at thirty years, this collection of bluegrass and country musicians kicks off with such stars as Parmalee, Mo Pitney, Michael Ray, Pat Cooper and Carey Murdock, before headlining 2011 American Idol champion Scotty McCreery. The benefit concert will open doors at the Augusta Marina at 11am on May 3rd, with music beginning at noon, and food being offered all day, with proceeds of the $35 at the door admission benefitting the Augusta SERTOMA Club. COST: $23-$35, MORE INFO.   THE KINFOLKS SOUL FOOD FESTIVAL You may have to "push it" on the treadmill for a while after this festival featuring the traditional eats of the Deep South, with Award-Winning Chefs Robert Roberts and Amadeus. You might pick up a few Soul Food cookin' tricks to slip up your sleeve for the next Sunday family dinner while rockin' it out to the music of nationally-proclaimed and recently reunited Salt-N-Pepa. This just may be an event your tastebuds can't afford to miss at Lady Antebellum Ampitheater on Saturday, May 2nd. COST: $25-$45, MORE INFO.soulfoodfestJOHN FOGERTY OF CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL Someone told us long ago that there was a calm before the storm, but we had no idea that this had been coming for some time. The late 1960's and early 1970's rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival cranked out so many hits in such a short period of time their name alone could stand as a part of the foundation of today's classic rock scene. There's no way we would have ever thought we'd have the honor of seeing John Fogerty live, but Augusta's Bell Auditorium will be rolling out the Cajun broil for Fogerty at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12. Be a part of the Revival! COST: $45-95, MORE INFO.John-Fogerty-at-The-Bell-Auditorium We'll keep adding to this list as we come across more music events in Augusta this summer. Do you know of any musical events coming up we should share?   To continue to learn more about Augusta history and events, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, Pinterest, and Google.   Some other cool community events to put on your calendar might be Fort Gordon's Springfest, Fort Gordon's Independence Day Festival, or Walden Foundation's Golf Fundraiser. Drive Baby Rocks!

If you have been to a park around the CSRA lately chances are you have seen a painted rock tucked away under a bush or at the top of a slide. It’s a phenomenon that has taken over the Augusta area and we LOVE IT! Rock painting has given kids a new activity to do with their friends and family that gets them outside. It’s a simple activity that is putting smiles on faces all over town. If you aren’t familiar with the “game” kids paint rocks with bright colors or short messages and then hide them for other people to find. When you find a rock you can post it on social media, replace the rock with your own painted rock, or re-hide it somewhere else. It’s so simple and yet so much fun! Milton Ruben has decided to get in on the action! Beginning Tomorrow, July 18th, you will find Drive Baby rocks popping up at the parks around town. We have painted 9 rocks and hid them in parks around town from Grovetown all the way to North Augusta. Only 1 rock per park. These painted rocks can be turned in, by children ages 12 years and younger, to Milton Ruben for a fun prize! Here on our lot we have 3 buildings, we have 3 rocks for each building. The back of your rock will tell you which building to go to to receive your prize. Simply visit the sales desk and one of our awesome Sales Managers will be there to greet you. We are looking forward to joining in on this fun activity and we can’t wait to meet everyone! Be sure to pose for a picture with your rock and don’t forget the hashtag #DriveBabyRocks. See you out there!

We're Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month All October

To the employees of Milton Ruben, finding a cure for breast cancer is personal. Our employees, as well as their friends, neighbors, families and community members have been afflicted and affected by this disease, and we have once again decided to come together as a company to spread awareness for breast cancer and collect funds for treatment and a cure during the month of October. If you see one of our employees wearing a pink ribbon during the month of October, that means that he or she has donated to University Hospital’s Breast Health Center’s Mobile Mammography Unit. The center has been accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. University has the first and longest-running nationally accredited breast health center in the region and is only the second one in the state to be honored with this recognition. Several of our employees are also participating in University Hospital’s 16th Annual Miracle Mile Walk on Saturday, Oct. 15 in Downtown Augusta. We encourage you to walk in the event, or even start a team. If you see the Milton Ruben Drive Babies, be sure to stop us and say hi! With these fundraising efforts, Milton Ruben Superstore is trying to raise a combined $1,500. If this happens, Milton Ruben Toyota General Manager Chuck Easters has agreed to let an employee throw a pie in his face! Milton Ruben Toyota is Playing Fore the Pets

We’ll admit that we go weak in the knees when we see a vehicle that’s obviously cared for. Whether it’s a car with 200,000 plus miles or a personalized truck, we appreciate a good automobile. But it’s not just shiny metal that warms our hearts. Hey, we’re not robots! We at Milton Ruben Toyota also get that warm fuzzy feeling when we see an animal in a happy home. And we’re not the only ones. That’s why we’re excited to partner with the Friends of the Animal Shelter, or FOTAS, for their third annual “Playing Fore the Pets” Charity Golf Tournament in Aiken, SC. Looking back at last year’s event, it was an easy decision to sponsor the tournament again. From brunch to golf to General Manager Chuck Easters getting to ride in an actual helicopter, it was a day of fun in addition to a day of giving. This year, the tournament will be at Woodside Plantation Country Club on Monday, Sept. 26. Join us for our TWO Par 3 holes on the course. Make a hole-in-one, get a brand new Toyota Camry. Start practicing your swing now! After the tournament, FOTAS is bringing back their Helicopter Ball Drop. Pre-numbered golf balls will be dropped from 300 feet over a designated hole at Woodside Plantation Country Club. You can “buy” a ball with a ten dollar donation to FOTAS, and the corresponding numbered ball that lands in (or closest to) the hole wins $1,000! There is still time to sign up your team for the golf tournament, and balls for the helicopter drop are still available for purchase. Visit http://www.fotasaiken.org/golf-tournament-save-the-date/ for more details. We can’t wait fore the event! The mission of FOTAS is to support the Aiken County Animal Shelter by promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership so that one day, no adoptable animals will ever need to be euthanized in the shelter.
